Mundaka

Northern Spain is home of Mundaka, a left-hander that grinds across an open river mouth, the wave sits at the base of an old Basque fishing village and locals are about as friendly as a hangover. You can get a wave, but you’ll need to pump up your cajones and show some respect. I lived and surfed in Spain for three years and never encountered a smile amongst the Spanish lineups; mostly grumbles and grunts.

Mundaka is a 5-hour drive from Madrid, once out of the capital the drive is exquisite, head towards San Sebastian and follows the signs to Mundaka. Depending on the time of the year there is a great campsite at the entrance of the village or you can find a pension in town for 50-100 euros. I surfed it in all seasons, but for the best waves you’ll need to bring your 4/3 and booties for a fall session.

Cornwall, U.K.

Cornwall is the epicenter of surfing in Europe, though you’ll need a GPS system and car to get to most breaks. The surf is scattered along this English peninsula, sticking out the side of the bottom half of the UK into the line of swell-fire, catching both southern and northern swells along its multiple personality shores.

Getting there is easy, catch a 45-minute flight from London for $100 and find a friend or rental car to explore the beautiful coast. Finding a break isn’t too difficult but you’ll need a map and have to drive on the left side of the road which can be challenging. There are lots of surfers in Cornwall, yet they are some of the most polite surfers I’ve ever met.

BA and Southwest fly from Gatwick to a small airport in Newquey. There is a departure tax of 5 Pounds to help rebuild the airport. Cold beer and tasty English sandwiches are available in the departure lounge.

Baja TripN, Is it Safe?

I have been going into Baja for thirty-five years, I’ve seen most everything. I’ve also spent a few memorial day weekends down there, campgrounds packed, long lines at the border, bars spilling over. This last trip was quite a different experience—freaky. We drove down during the day, crossed without incident and made our way to a surf spot just outside of Colonet. We didn’t see one other car with surfers or surfboards the whole way down and the place we stayed, normally packed on a holiday weekend, was empty and remained empty the whole weekend.

I am good friends with the owner of the Hostel at 4casas and I was sure he would tell me straight up without any exaggeration how bad the situation is—he has been in Baja 28 years and has his pulse on life in Mexico, he is a ‘Mexican gringo.’ I asked him a few question and his responses were unequivocal. Did the rapes happen? For sure. Are people getting kidnapped? For sure. Is there a band of ex-police committing crimes and extorting people? For sure. He went on to tell me about the war between the government and drug cartels in northern Baja, he said that it was going to get worse before getting better. He also stated that because of all the violence that the new port project was put on hold, nobody wants to send there freight into a war zone.

If you are going to Baja please don’t drive at night and don’t pull over for anyone—not even the police. Don’t camp in open areas, stay at well established hotels and if you have to stop on the road, stop where there is high visibility or wait for a gas station or other public area. If you have a newer car you are a target, if you are pulling toys you are a target, if you are in an RV you are a target, I’d recommend taking the plates off your car—a tactic that I have used in the past. Single females, stay at home. Don’t bring the kids.

We had a great trip, I wouldn’t recommend going—-that Baja tourism video is a joke, you are not safe in Mexico these days—-I’d go back in a heartbeat, but then again I leave for South Africa this week were there are more murders than any other country on the planet and thus I am not a good example of what to do or not to do—-one must take calculated risks in life, someday the formula ends for everyone.

Peace.

Derek
