A Brazilian Paradise

The place: Ilha Grande, a real paradise on Earth, down in Brazil.

It's located on the atlantic coast of Brazil, right in front of Angra dos Reis, which is pretty close to Rio de Janeiro (you probably heard before about Rio, did you?). So if you hit Rio, you can't miss this little island. So make sure you schedule a couple of days for it, and you won't regret. Here's a good reason why: the Lopes Mendes beach, which some people consider one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It's a bit windy, but breaks are amazing, and water crystal clear. Weather is warm almost whole year round. And over the top, it's quiet and you will hardly find a crowd.

This beautiful place has been so well preserved because it used to be a prison, later turned into a reserve, which you can access taking a ferry from Angra dos Reis, or taking a fisher boat.

Walking down the streets near the beach, you will find it is full of little restaurants, with friendly owners / cooks ready to serve you the best grilled fish you will try, ever.

Surfing Families the New Wave in Mentawai

Surfing Families the New Wave in the Mentawais

Getting wet in the Mentawais just got a lot easier for the majority of surfers on the planet. (the ones with families!). Everyone wants to surf Mentawai but pulling together the minimum group of 6 to 8 guys to charter a boat is about as much fun as herding cats. Getting shacked in perfect Mentawai barrels has always been worth the months of planning and the drama of crossing 100 miles of ocean on a small boat but clearly most surfers who have been through the boat-trip wringer are ready for something more laid back and buffed.

Mentawai Sanctuary have been working overtime to deliver a new composite surf vacation that takes all the stress out of booking and organizing a visit. They are marketing these new surf vacation packages under the m e n t a w a i : : f u s i o n ™ label.

MS Sales Coordinator, Jesse Liddon, explained the concept."If you have ever tried to organize a group to go out on a surf charter you know how much work it is.... and thankless work a lot of the time. Most surfers who try to set up "boys only" or "girls only trips" vow never to do it again!"

The Mentawai Sanctuary team have gone to great lengths to take all the stress out of the booking process and give surfers and their families a lot of choices so they can customize their vacation exactly the way they want it. Everything can be arranged on-line including your deposit and final payment and our resort based packages have no minimum number to confirm a booking. Invite your friends by all means but just give them the website address and let them do the rest themselves. The booking process is backed up by Adventure Engine, the world's biggest portal for on-line adventure packages.

"We are the first surf company in the Mentawais to offer combinations of a week ashore and a week on a live-aboard" Jesse added. Surfers can book as singles, couples or groups and they can mix and match and change dates even while they are out in the islands. "We wanted to spice up the atmosphere and appeal to women.

Nicaragua Intro + San Juan

Nicaragua’s border with Honduars can be crossed at Las Manos---El Espino and Guasaule. Costa Rica can be reached via Sapoa. Nicaragua has the lowest population density in Central America, which makes it a pleasure to drive through but 50% of Nicaraguans live below the poverty line and thus some of the inner cities can be quite depressing.

The majority of the people live along the Pacific coast---it is a nation of young people where 72% of the five million are under 30. Road conditions are ok, you can use your ATM/Credit Card at most gas stations. Places to surf in Nicaragua are Las Salina, Playa Los Cardones, Playa El Velero, Playa Madera and Playa Aserradores.

There are many breaks north and south of San Juan del Sur, you can walk or take various forms of transport to the North and South, Playa Madera, north of SJ a few clicks offers the best surf around.

You can stay in town and arrange transport or crash at Madera Surf Camp for a few bucks a night in very basic accommodation.

Cape Town Fires Like James Brown

Cape Town has to be one of the most location diverse places on the planet, the cape is a mosaic of inlets, cliffs, mountains and peninsulas that jet out into the ocean from different angles, positions, and directions.

It can be flat in a place like Hout Bay but be bombing just 30 minutes over the hill at Muizenburg. You can go north, south, east, or west from almost any location and find a section of the coast that is facing in just right direction to suck in the swell and create a oceanic playground.

Just click on to magicseaweed.com and pull up the latest reports, pack the car and go get some tasty African waves.

Cape Town to Jbay

You’ve got two options getting to Jbay from Cape Town, you can make the seven-hour drive along the rolling hills and open fields to Jbay of you can fly to Port Elizabeth and make the short trip to Jbay from the port town, about 45 minute drive.

From Cape Town go towards to airport and just keep going on the N2, you’ll climb the grade for a spectacular view of the Cape and then carry on towards George and then eventually HumonsDorp. It’s a straight shot, turn off the N2 when you see the Jbay sign and follow the signs to town and ask where Super Tubes area is.

Half way between Cape Town and Jbay is a wonderful little farm house called the Blue Crane Farmshop, brimming with organic goodies, homemade breads and pastries and a warm fire in the winter. You can’t miss it and you shouldn’t, the address is PO Bo 111, Heidelberg. Telephone is 028-7222651.

Having a rental car in Jbay is nice but not essential, most of the waves are within walking distance of the guest houses peppered about along the super tunes areas. Town is a short bicycle ride away, there you’ll find banks, cafes and internet. Food is ok in Jbay, everyone seems to make their way to the Mexican at the end of the strip for drinks in the evening, the food is alright. The sunflower has good snacks and a great breakfast, the best place for internet access is The Office 4 U (042-293-3488) 100 Rand for 6 hours in 2008, it is directly in front of the sun flower.

Peace.

Derek

Southern France

Southern France is full of surf, from the border of Spain along the southern coast to the beaches outside of Bordeaux. Wide open dunes tower along the southern shores and give way to hundred-foot cliffs that extend into the sea. Sandbars fill the French waterways and walking and finding a solo peak down the way can forget crowds. Biarritz is a comfortable town to hang in, Hossegor is more country-style and Lacanau hangs away from it all on the outskirts of Bordeaux about 45 minutes from the train station.

Traveling by train is easy and comfortable in Europe but you’ll need some transportation around the beach areas to check all the different spots or to get away from the crowds. Eating in France is a joy, prepare to crack a bottle of wine at dinner and don’t skip the dessert. Vegetarian food is more difficult to find, but fortunately there is always a good Italian restaurant near.

The train from Madrid to Biarritz takes about 6 hours and costs about $45. There is surf all along the northern Spanish coast and if you stay near the border you can easily drive info both France and Spain to check swell and conditions. France can be windy but there are lost of coves and cliff that protect certain breaks. Anglet is just on the north side of Biarritz and has lots good surf, near the breakwater on the inside there is a wave protected from most winds---check it if everything else is blown out. There is also a protected cove to the south of Biarritz that hold swell and defends against northern winds.
